India is making great strides in nuclear technology. This was noted by Yukiya Amano, the Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) during a visit to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He stressed that for mass generation of electricity, nuclear energy is important and it paves the way for economic advancement of a country.
He also said in Nuclear science, India is a very important partner of the IAEA. He stated that in matters of production and distribution of nuclear energy, important aspects like transparency and communication shouldn't be ignored. After the Fukushima accident, they learnt a lot about safety aspects and new rules were framed.
The IAEA chief said that the KKNPP (Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant) has incorporated the best safety measures and design aspects. The passive cooling system, core catcher, natural cooling system and diesel generator are among the five safety aspects included.
He also said that nuclear energy is a very good alternative to the conventional source of energy like fossil fuels that are harmful to the environment and induce climate change. There is no emission of greenhouse gases in generating nuclear power. Nuclear technology is also very useful in agriculture, food safety and Information Technology.
There are 449 operational nuclear plants in the world and another 60 are under construction.
