In India, the average internet speed has reached 2.5 Mbps (megabits per second), but Hyderabad became the first city in India to get 1 GBPS wired broadband internet services as Bengaluru-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) ACT Fibernet announced it's launch on Thursday.
The services were launched by Telangana IT minister K T Rama Rao who said that his vision was to connect the residents of his state through high speed internet. He said that this product would further help fulfill his vision of making Telengana a tech and digitally advanced hub.
He added that key government establishments such as the Secretariat and the Assembly, among others, will be upgraded to this high speed connectivity.
ACT Fibernet had invested Rs 100 crore to introduce this technology to Hyderabad. Its CEO Bala Malladi said that they planned to introduce this service in Hyderabad first as it has some of the best technology brands, educational institutions and a vibrant economy. He is confident that his service will help Telengana government achieve its target to connect all its 23 million residents through the internet by 2018.
ACT Fibernet plans to launch 1 GBPS wired internet service in 10 other cities in the near-term.
At present, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore and a couple of cities in the US offer 1 GBPS sevices on a large scale.
