Once more, Dipa Karmakar strikes!
Dipa Karmakar, a native of Tripura and daughter of a weightlifting coach, began gymnastics at six. Despite being born with flat feet, she trained rigorously to overcome this challenge. At 14, she won the Junior Nationals in Jalpaiguri. Karmakar represented Tripura at the 2011 National Games of India, winning gold in floor, vault, balance beam, uneven bars, and all-around competitions. She made history by winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to achieve this feat.
Surgery, Recovery ~
In April 2017, Dipa Karmakar had knee surgery to repair her anterior cruciate ligament, and she required more than nine months of rehabilitation. She missed numerous contests, including the Asian Championships, the World Championships, and the Commonwealth Games, because she was unable to even practice. Two months after her surgery, she received a Padma Shri from India's then-President, Pranab Mukherjee, that year. She was also included in Forbes' 2017 list of Asian under-30 super performers. In addition, she received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (2016) and the Arjuna Award (2014). Karmakar had a spectacular return in 2018 when she became the first gymnast from India to win a gold medal in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, a global competition. Only five women have ever executed the Produnova vault, which is among the hardest in women's gymnastics. In July 2023 Karmakar won the gold medal in the Odisha Artistic Gymnastics National Championship in January 2024. The Olympic qualification tournament concluded with the Asian Gymnastics Championship.
