India has made history in the world of boxing, as four of its female pugilists clinched gold medals at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship held in New Delhi. The nation erupted in jubilation as boxers Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, Nitu Ghanghas, and Saweety Boora secured their victories in the ring.
Nikhat Zareen, the two-time gold medalist, defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam with an impressive 5-0 scoreline in the light flyweight category finals. Zareen’s win made her the second Indian female boxer to achieve multiple gold medals in the World Championships, following in the footsteps of the legendary Mary Kom.
In the meantime, Lovlina Borgohain, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, battled it out in the 70-75kg finals against Australia’s Caitlin Anne Parker. Borgohain secured her maiden gold medal win for India after a close 5-2 split decision win, adding another gold to India's tally.
It was a golden weekend for India as earlier on Saturday, Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora also had impressive performances, winning gold medals in their respective categories after defeating their opponents in the finals on Saturday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the boxers on their incredible feat, commending their exceptional skills and determination. Indian boxing enthusiasts are overjoyed at the historic achievement of the women's boxing team, who have done the nation proud with their incredible victories.
