In a truly inspiring moment, Garima, a nine-year-old visually impaired girl from Navdi village in Mahendergarh district, Haryana, overcame the challenges of her own disability and touched the lives of over 1,000 students through her heartfelt initiative, “Sakshar Pathshala." She was recently honored with the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in the social service category by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, in New Delhi. Her tireless efforts to offer the gift of education and create opportunities reflect a spirit of resilience and compassion that has made her one of the 19 extraordinary young individuals from across the country to receive this honor.
Garima, along with the other awardees, will take part in the national Republic Day Parade on January 26th. This year, she is the sole girl from Haryana to receive this prestigious honor.
After overcoming obstacles in her early schooling, Garima made the decision to assist underprivileged kids. Like her father, Dr Narendra, a dedicated teacher and social worker, Garima aspires to teach and make a positive impact on society.
Garima has extended her teaching beyond her village, reaching out to slum communities in Narnaul, Ateli, and Rewari. She has equipped them with study materials, basic literacy skills, and the hope of a brighter future.
Children between the ages of 5 and 18 who have demonstrated exceptional performance in areas including bravery, culture, the environment, art, science and technology, social work, and sports are awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. Garima is one of the 19 kids who were chosen for the prize; four of them fell under the social service category. They each received a diploma, medal, and citation booklet.
According to Garima, education is an essential part of a child's life and a fundamental right since it even enables them to contribute to the advancement of the nation. The Haryana government has taken numerous steps to guarantee that no child is denied an education in order to achieve this aim.
