In a bid to keep a track of the elephant population in the state, the elephant population estimation exercise will be kicked off in North Bengal. This is a three day exercise which will take place in different parts of North Bengal and a training workshop for the same was also organized for those who will be a part of this estimation exercise.
As it is a part of All India Synchronised Elephant Population Estimation, apart from North Bengal all other state will also conduct this exercise.
North Bengal has been kept in the north-east India cluster with Assam, Arunachal and Nagaland. South Bengal has been kept in the eastern India cluster with Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar where the exercise will be conducted in April.
There are more than 165 teams in North Bengal who will be a part of this estimation and more than 700 forest staff and volunteers will participate in the exercise. Similar exercise had taken place in the year 2014 and there were more than 550 elephants in the state. This exercise takes place once in every five year.
PhD student with Centre for Wildlife Studies, Aritra Kshettry informed that block counts, elephant population structure methods and dung density transects will be used this year in the exercise.
All the forest in North Bengal will remain closed during the time of this exercise. The overall result of all the sates is expected to be out in the month of June.
