In a heartening development, the Kawal Tiger Reserve is witnessing a remarkable transformation into a haven for smooth-coated otters. These aquatic creatures, locally known as "Neeti Pilli" in Telugu, have found a safe and thriving habitat along the banks of the Kadam and Godavari rivers, as well as the canals within the reserve.
The presence of these otters is a positive sign indicating the maintenance of a healthy river ecosystem. However, their conservation is crucial due to the ongoing threats they face. The smooth-coated otters are vulnerable to habitat loss caused by water pollution and over-exploitation. Activities such as dam construction and agricultural practices pose significant risks to their habitats.
Recognizing the importance of protecting these remarkable creatures, forest officials and conservationists are working together to ensure their survival. Research officers from the Hyderabad Tiger Conservation Society (HYTICOS) have been monitoring the otters' presence within the reserve. They have discovered groups of otters, sometimes consisting of up to eight individuals, in various areas along the rivers.
Efforts are also underway to document their behavior and raise awareness about their conservation needs. Recently, a documentary capturing the otters on camera was produced, thanks to the support of local shepherds and the Hyderabad Tiger Conservation Society. With continued dedication and proactive measures, these remarkable creatures can thrive, and their presence will continue to be a testament to the success of conservation initiatives.
