Tennis lovers have a reason to rejoice on Monday as Wimbledon kick-starts for the 140th time this year making it the world’s oldest tennis tournament.
On this occasion, Google has rolled out a new Doodle which features two animated tennis rackets playing a quick round against a green background – a recognition to the grass courts on which Wimbledon matches are played.
The audience is comprised of all the Google letters except L which is made to represent the umpire. Well, that’s not all. There is also Rufus the Hawk, a bird at the top right corner which according to Google, dutifully shoos away any pigeons who try to land on the court while a match is going on.
The Championships first started in 1877 and Google wrote about it – “To many fans and players, Wimbledon is tennis. Good luck to this year’s competitors!”
This year, Wimbledon begins from July 3-16. Defending champion Andy Murray and fellow two-time winner Rafael Nadal will take center stage on the first day of Wimbledon.
Champion in 2008 and 2010 and a three-time runner-up, Nadal couldn’t compete last year because of a wrist injury.
Serena Williams who announced her pregnancy in April will be absent in this year’s Championships.
