Weddings are all about celebrations and laughter. The preparations kick-start from months before and the guest list keeps extending. We Indians spend a lot of moolah when it comes to wedding ceremonies but have you ever wondered what the impact would be if we bring in a few changes in it?
Preeti Kumbhare and Abhay Deware did not go for a lavish marriage ceremony, they rather donated the money for their wedding to ten families of farmers who committed suicide. Their philanthropic act is something to be highly proud of.
I had gone to Kolkata a few months back and one day while sitting on the sofa, I saw a wedding card on our tea table. I got curious and opened it immediately and there was a big smile on my face after reading the card. The parents of the groom requested the guests not to bring any gifts or cash but, to get books and stationeries for children which would be donated to an NGO.
It got me so happy that I didn’t want to miss out on the wedding at any cost. The marriage was two days before my flight so I had a chance to attend it. The next day I went to a stationery shop along with my mother and bought notebooks, pencils, erasers, pens, stencils, and crayons.
On the day of the wedding, I got everything packed properly and headed to the ceremony and after reaching there I got another reason to rejoice. I saw the hosts giving away saplings to people as a return gift. It was also a way of generating awareness about afforestation. Wow! What a great thought. I was left in awe.
Firstly, I congratulated the couple and then went straight away to the groom’s parents to tell them what a lovely idea they had come up with. We spoke for nearly 20 minutes about climate change and how planting a tree can help ameliorate the condition while we also spoke about how important it is to contribute to society in every other way.
I was completely content that day and thought to myself how incredible everything around us will turn out to be if all of us start thinking in the same manner. If you too are amazed after reading this story, then let us know about your thoughts on it and what kind of wedding you would choose in the comments section below.
