11-year-old Rakhi was playing with her four-year-old brother in their village in Uttarakhand when they were suddenly confronted by a leopard. Instead of running away from danger, the brave girl in a bid to protect her brother from the big cat lay on him and saved his life although she was grievously injured in the process.
Rakhi’s aunt witnessed the incident and gave details about it. She said that due to Rakhi’s brave act, the boy remained largely unharmed while the girl sustained serious injuries on the neck.
Soon villagers gathered and raised an alarm driving the leopard back into the forest. They rushed Rakhi from one hospital to another but were refused admission due to the seriousness of her injuries. Finally they took her to a government hospital in Delhi, but unfortunately, were turned away by the authorities.
Rakhi’s aunt said that when nothing worked their way, they approached Uttarkhand Tourism Minister and local MLA Satpal Maharaj with whose help they could finally admit the girl to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. Rakhi is out of danger now. The minister gave a sum of Rs one lakh to the girl’s family for treatment and also assured them of payment for other related expenses.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat praised the girl for her bravery and assured her family of all help. For her exceptional act of bravery Rakhi’s name will be recommended for the Bravery Award.
