Several regions in India still has minimal access to water sources. Reports say that half a billion of people survive under the condition of water scarcity throughout the year. We are constantly told to save water but, how many of us really bother? There is one girl who is doing her best to solve the Global Water Crisis which has a humongous impact on the universe. Garvita Gulhati thought of changing the scenario when she learned 14 million liters of water that remain in our glasses is wasted every year.
Garvita along with her friend Pooja Tanawade came up with Why Waste? in 2015, an initiative which urges people to alter their attitude towards natural resources, especially water. They went up to restaurants in Bengaluru and asked the staffs to fill glasses half full for the customers at first as sometimes they don’t drink the entire water. Initially, it was quite difficult for them to convince people because they were young but, things took a different turn after years.
Once Garvita got done with her school, she decided to work on Why Waste alone and today the initiative has garnered a huge amount of recognition.
Garvita and her team also came up with The Urban Water Challenge through Why Waste? which has empowered youth from government and low-income private schools to come up with solutions related to water problems.
Last year Garvita got the title of Global Changemaker and she wishes to reach out to more people through her endeavor. Why Waste has collaborated with several restaurants in Bengaluru until now and they are trying their best to alter the scenario of water practices in restaurants. They were also recognized by the prestigious Ashoka Innovators.
Garvita is just 19-year-old and she has been bringing in huge alterations at this age. Her story also tells that working hard everyday adds up to big results. If You have a voice, raise it.
