Concerns over food security have grown in various nations as a result of supply disruptions and high costs. One of the greatest producers of wheat, barley, and fertilizers worldwide is Russia, followed by Ukraine. Despite having a lot of arable lands, India has low production.

The Center is combining numerous schemes to create the "biggest grain storage" program in response to the global food shortages caused by the Covid-19 outbreak and the conflict in Ukraine. According to a Mint report, programs run by the ministries of agriculture and farmers' welfare, consumer affairs, food and public distribution and food processing may soon be integrated.

Speaking to Mint,  Ashok Gulati, agricultural economist and former chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices said that the storage plan has been in development for a while, but the government is only now attempting to put it into practice. 

In terms of grains kept in storage and storage capacity, the country has been falling behind. The government is now attempting to speed things up. The most crucial aspect of the storage strategy will be determining whether it will use modern storage or the outdated method, in which each man carries a bag and constructs a storage pyramid. A mechanized system is much more accessible and contemporary.

According to Siraj Hussain, a former agriculture secretary, the full value of this storage won't materialize until warehouses are required to register with the Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority.
