In the bustling life of Kolkata, where the race to secure a livelihood is relentless, Tuktuki Das’s story shines as a symbol of resilience and innovation. Despite her academic achievements, Tuktuki faced an uphill battle in securing a job. Her journey from an MA graduate in English Literature to the proud owner of a popular tea shop, ‘MA English Chaiwali,’ is a tale of determination, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Tuktuki hails from a humble background. Her father is a van driver, and her mother runs a small grocery shop. Her parents harbored dreams of seeing her become a teacher, a goal Tuktuki dedicated herself to achieving. She studied diligently and earned her master's degree from Rabindra Bharati Open University. However, despite her qualifications and efforts, Tuktuki found herself unable to secure employment in her field.
Disheartened but not defeated, Tuktuki drew inspiration from an unexpected source: Prafull Billore, famously known as 'MBA Chaiwala.' Prafull, a farmer’s son from Madhya Pradesh, turned to tea-selling after failing to secure a high score in the CAT exam. His success story, which included expanding to 22 outlets across India, ignited a spark in Tuktuki. If he could turn a simple tea stall into a thriving business, why couldn’t she?
With renewed determination, Tuktuki rented a small shop near Habra station and launched her tea stall on November 1, 2021, under the unique name 'MA English Chaiwali.' She chose the name to reflect her academic background, turning her educational journey into a brand identity. On the inaugural day, Tuktuki celebrated by distributing free tea to her customers, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
Initially, Tuktuki’s parents were skeptical about her decision. They had invested in her education with the hope that she would secure a stable teaching job. The idea of their highly-educated daughter running a tea stall seemed inappropriate. However, Tuktuki was resolute. She believed in her vision and patiently convinced her parents. Her father, Prashanto Das, eventually came around, recognizing her desire for self-reliance. “Initially, I was not happy with her decision... But if this is her way to become self-reliant, then that’s good,” he admitted.

Tuktuki’s journey is not isolated. The COVID-19 pandemic had widespread economic repercussions, leading to job losses and pay cuts across various sectors. Highly skilled professionals, including techies, found themselves in precarious situations. Tuktuki’s story resonates with many who had to reinvent themselves in challenging times.
Today, ‘MA English Chaiwali’ is more than just a tea stall; it’s a symbol of resilience and ingenuity. Tuktuki’s success has transformed her family’s fortunes and silenced the naysayers. As Tuktuki brews tea, she also brews hope and motivation for countless others who face similar struggles.
