Hyundai Motor has made use of groundbreaking eco-friendly technology in making the New Sonata Hybrid which is the first commercial car with a solar roof charging system. The technology involves the installation of solar panels on the roof of the car which will provide vehicles with additional electrical power in addition to increasing fuel efficiency and driving range.
The solar roof charging system on the debut car supports the vehicle’s electric power source, increasing fuel efficiency and controlling CO2 emissions.
The technology involves the installation of silicon solar panels on the car roof. When solar energy activates the solar panel’s surface, the panel uses photons of light from the sun to create electron-hole pairs in silicon cells, which generate solar electricity. A controller converts the electricity thus generated into a standard voltage which is then stored in the battery.
The battery gets charged 30 to 60% per day even while driving. With a daily charging of 6 hours, the drivers’ travel distance can increase by an extra 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) annually. Along with efficiency, Hyundai Motor also took into account the design of the car while developing the solar charging system. Hyundai is expected to roll out the technology to all other vehicles across its range in the coming years.
