It was an incredible moment for Roger Federer as he outplayed his opponent Marin Cilic in straight sets to clinch his 8th Wimbledon title on Sunday. He became the greatest Wimbledon men’s champ of all time surpassing William Renshaw and Pete Sampras who each won the Wimbledon seven times.

Federer trounced injury hit Cilic with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win to become Wimbledon’s oldest men’s winner in the open era. He had also won the Australian Open in January. Federer admitted that he had never thought that he would be a record eight-time Wimbledon champion and never imagined of winning two majors in 2017.

Cilic, who was afflicted with a blistered foot endured a tough fight and persisted through the 101-minute affair. It was the first Wimbledon final for 6ft 6’ Cilic who filled the court the moment he walked in. Roger who was playing his 11th Wimbledon final outclassed Cilic without dropping a set.

Federer who had been written off as a faded force after his defeat in the Wimbledon semi-finals last year rested a knee injury and later made a comeback to win the Australian Open. Yesterday’s win in southwest London took his career trophy collection to a staggering 93.

This is Federer’s 19th Grand Slam title, the highest by any male player.
