Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has been hailed as a visionary and reformer. His successful efforts for peace with neighboring foe Eritrea has spread hope across Africa to nations that have been affected by civil unrest.
Abiy Ahmed’s Peace Efforts
The Nobel committee said that Abiy was honored for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea. When Abiy took office in April last year he initiated policies to transform societies in the Horn of Africa that have been adversely affected by border conflicts and civil unrest.
He formally ended a 20-year-old stalemate between Ethiopia and Eritrea in the historic meeting with the Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. He immediately freed dissident from jail, apologized for state brutality and welcomed home exiled groups.
The Nobel Committee
The Nobel committee chose from more than 300 nominations this year which included activist Greta Thunberg who was s strong contender. The committee believed that this award will encourage Abiy Ahmed to push on the peace initiatives in the right direction spreading winds of hope in Africa that have been marred by violence, border issues and civil unrest.
Abiy Ahmed said that he was thrilled and humbled to hear the news. "It is a prize given to Africa, given to Ethiopia", he said.
