After 95 years, a note written by Albert Einstein on happy living has surfaced and is up for auction in Jerusalem.

In 1922, the great physicist whose theory of relativity catapulted him to fame was on a lecture tour in Japan. He was informed that he had been selected for the prestigious Nobel Prize for physics and he was gradually becoming famous.

He was put up at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. That is when a Japanese courier arrived to give him a message. Either the courier might have refused to accept a tip as is the local practice or Einstein didn’t have small change, but he didn’t want the messenger to go empty-handed. So he penned down two notes in German and gave it to the messenger.

While giving the notes, Einstein said, “Maybe if you are lucky those notes will become much more valuable than just a regular tip.” The owner of the notes resides in Hamburg, Germany.

One note says “ a quiet and modest life brings more joy than a pursuit of success bound with constant unrest .” The other note simply reads “ where there’s a will there’s a way”.

Roni Grosz, the archivist in charge of the world’s largest Einstein collection at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University said that it is impossible to determine whether the notes were a reflection of Einstein’s own musings on his growing fame. According to Grosz, the notes may shed light on the private thoughts of the great physicist.
