Drones have come a long way, be it delivering products or managing a warehouse, aerial vehicles have evolved immensely. Humans are getting exposed to new technologies and ideas almost every now and then and most of them are making the best use of it. The engineers of the University of Maryland created wonders when a drone built by them delivered a kidney. The organ was successfully transplanted into a woman from Baltimore at the University of Maryland Medical Center who was going through dialysis.
The drone was developed keeping all the measures in mind which ensured safe delivery. It has sensors which could observe the state of the organ. The unmanned aerial vehicle is equipped with eight rotors and a lot of powertrains. A wireless mesh is also built to check the status of the drone and also to pass information to the ground crew. And the researchers are calling it a human organ monitoring and quality assurance apparatus for long-distance travel.
More than a hundred people were involved in making this initiative a success, a lot of testing session and hard work resulted in this incredible creativity. While discussing the same, the team leader of the project and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr Joseph Scalea quoted to Maryland Today: “As a result of the outstanding collaboration among surgeons, engineers, the Federal Aviation Administration, organ procurement specialists, pilots, nurses and, ultimately, the patient, we were able to make a pioneering breakthrough in transplantation.”
Organ delivery is something crucial and with this creativity, we can certainly say that drones equipped with relevant technologies can be a safe medium for this purpose.
