Dr Matthew Varghese, an orthopaedic expert who has the vision to make India polio free has made his way in the list of Bill Gates five real-life heroes.
Currently, Dr Varghese operates India's only polio ward in Delhi's St Stephen's Hospital. Dr Varghese spends all his time in the rehabilitation of the polio patients. India got rid of Polio in 2011, but yet there are thousands suffering from the immobility the disease brought to their lives.
According to a report the hospital had 600 reconstructive surgeries to correct malformations in the past which has now come down to less than 200. This saviour of mankind, Dr Varghese shares his dream of having an empty ward in the future and also hopes that the day will come soon with the record of polio patients going down.
This humble human not only treats his patients but also helps them with education and employment.
The government and society need to be more sensitive towards people afflicted with polio. With surgery and support, they can live independently and contribute to the country's growth, said the humble doctor
