The UP government has come up with a novel idea where people can plant a tree in the name of a loved one. It has roped in the Uttar Pradesh forest department that has earmarked “green patches” in all districts of the state and informed people that they can plant a tree in memory of a loved one. Trees can also be planted on their birthday, anniversary or any other special occasion.
Planting a tree will make the pocket lighter by Rs 2,100 as the sum will have to be paid to the forest department towards the cost of the tree, a tree guard and two- year maintenance charges that will be taken up by the forest department authorities.
A one-hectare plot of forest has been marked in Sanjay Van situated on Delhi Road for this purpose. The plot will be called Smriti Van where each tree will be planted at a distance of four metres by four metres. The trees will exhibit boards displaying the name of the person who planted the tree and for whom it was planted.
There is also a provision that if a person is unable to come on the fixed date of the plantation, then the forest department authorities can also plant it. Around 630 trees can be planted in area reserved for plantation. The area can be expanded, should the need arise. This initiative has been taken so that people will remain connected to nature.
