If you love rustic ambience and traditional food then Chulangan is the place for you. Located at Kharadi, this restaurant with traditional ambience of a rural village will take you down the memory lines where you enjoyed the village life.
This is a restaurant that serves Maharashtrian cuisine at its best. You can enjoy some of the authentic dishes which you have never heard of or must have forgotten after listening about it from your grandma’s stories. As the name suggests. Chulangan means preparing food on the traditional Chulha and this restaurant serves you the food in traditional style.
My India Dream spoke to Ashok Bhosale, owner of this unique restaurant that serves Maharashtrian food.
Tell us about your restaurant.
This is my first restaurant in Pune, but I have been in this hoteling business since 16 years now. All this while, I use to run a restaurant at Nagar road in rural area. Whole idea of starting this restaurant three-months before was serving city people with some traditional Mahrashtrian dishes. This is a vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurant.
What about the ambience of this traditional joint?
Once you arrive at this restaurant, it will take you down the memory lines of rural village. There is air-conditioned restaurant while there are various sections in our restaurant. We have a traditional sitting arrangement with low sitting. There are paintings of rural villages and its kitchen with bamboo trees surrounding the restaurant. We also have a small open hall for kitty parties and family function. There is a children’s play area with mud huts. Children can enjoy playing in the traditional huts while there are swings and slides for kids to play.
Tell us about the cuisine served at Chulangan.
We serve authentic Maharashtrian food here. What is special about the preparations, is making use of traditional Chulha like in villages. It gives our food a different taste. We serve Chapati, Bhakri prepared on Chulha. There is mutton Thali, Chicken Thali for those who love non-vegetarian food. For those who prefer vegetarian, we serve traditional vegetarian dishes like Maswadi, Kothimbir Wadi, and Dubuk Wadi among others.
The taste being traditional, guests love the food served here. We also serve few North Indian dishes but the emphasis is surely on traditional Maharashtrian cuisine.
Being in hoteling business what do you do for zero food wastage?
We prefer not to waste food first of all. But incase we have excess food left then we have a tie-up with NGO and orphanages. There is a person who regularly visits our restaurants and takes away the edible food. For the food wasted in the plate by our customers, we have our pig farming and food remained is used for them. We make sure than minimal food is wasted at our restaurant.
What do you think about FoodDosti app?
It is one of the best apps I have ever heard off. Even if this app is new, its idea is one which is totally worth appreciating. It will help to reduce food wastage. Even if it personally does not help any hotelier, but it will surely help Indians to value food and reduce food wastage completely.
