One such iconic figure is Lorna Cordeiro, whose remarkable journey in music has captivated hearts both locally and globally. As she celebrates her 80th birthday on August 9, 2024, we honor her unparalleled impact on Goan festivities and her timeless influence on audiences around the world.

Lorna Cordeiro was from a devout Catholic household in Goa. In a family of six children, she was the third born. After the regular family prayers, Lorna's singing abilities were initially noticed by her friends and neighbors, who heard her sing Konkani songs. Her family was able to fully appreciate her skill and support her in exploring it to the utmost thanks to these appreciations. The majority of exceptional individuals have a mentor who guides them; Lorna Cordeiro was no exception. She was taken under the wing of well-known musician, songwriter, and composer Chris Perry when she was in her teens. Lorna's exceptional range of talent blossomed under his tutelage. She started a nine-year odyssey that would make her an icon of Goan music, singing in his band.

In India, jazz music reached its dazzling peak in the 1960s and 1970s. Legends talk about the most well-known practitioners of this style, the enchanting team of Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro. Lorna showcased her incredible talent at Venice, a nightclub located in the Hotel Astoria in Bombay. Chris Perry led the band with his captivating saxophone skills. They became popular right away.
She was not just a captivating vocalist but also a dynamic performer with a number of unique moves. In keeping with her signature manner, she would exclaim "I am Lorna" as she stretched her arms wide towards the audience to start her performance.
Venetians would go into a frenzy when she performed jazz and pop tunes by Connie Francis and Ella Fitzgerald. Once Lorna hit every high note, she would usually send the crowd into a frenzy as she flowed elegantly to the music. As the band's performance reached a climax, she shot a quick glimpse at Chris Perry, who was about to culminate his piece by dropping to his knees and raising his sax to the heavens. Her innovative on-stage chemistry with Chris was the talk of the town, and she was the lifeblood of the audience. When they performed together, crowds of people flocked to see them. They performed in renowned hotels and nightclubs in Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta, Shimla, Ooty, and other cities as a result of their fame.
Two movies have immortalized Lorna Cordeiro's inspirational journey on film: Nachom-ia Kumpasar, a Konkani film that is a fictionalized account of her life, and Bombay Velvet, a Bollywood film that features Lorna Cordeiro's real-life persona as its inspiration for the female lead role, Rosie Noronha.
On her birthday eve, she said " I will be celebrating my birthday with my family and few close friends who will be meeting over dinner''.
