A traditional double-hulled canoe called Hokule’a traversed the globe in three years guided only by the wind and stars and reached Hawaii concluding the epic journey.
This is the first such trip by such a boat which embarked on the journey without any modern navigational tools. There were around a dozen crew members for each leg of the voyage who relied solely on nature’s cues – ocean swells, stars, winds, birds and their own gut to cover about 40,000 nautical miles (74,000 km ) on the sea.
They sailed to 19 countries spreading the message of ‘malama honua’ which means Caring for the Earth.
In 2014, the canoe had set sail from the island of Oahu. According to the organizers of the voyage, along with the earth message, the sailors also shared indigenous wisdom, groundbreaking conservation and preservation initiatives.
The voyage was a big success and the sailors were treated to a grand homecoming celebration where large crowds had gathered.
The main aim of the voyage was to sail through the oceans using only the ancient methods of wayfinding just as the first Polynesian settlers had reached the islands hundreds of years ago.
The Hokule’a will next embark on an eight-month journey throughout the Hawaiian islands.
