Mumbai traffic police armed with body cameras can breathe easy now as they have proof of violations which can be shown to offenders who argue and refuse to pay fines. Traffic personnel at Dadar and Worli in Mumbai are now donned with body cameras which come in handy to record the goings-on while issuing a challan.
This is a pilot project which aims to restrain motorists from arguing with the traffic police as well as keep a check on their behaviour while dealing with the policemen. Motorists sometimes behave harshly with the traffic police and many traffic policemen and women have been victims of physical abuse while on duty.
There are plans to procure body cameras for all the traffic personnel throughout the city. The device has a recording capacity of 8-10 hours. It is mandatory to wear the camera even while monitoring vehicular movement on the streets.
An official stated that body cameras will bring in transparency while the traffic personnel is performing his duty as complaints of corruption can be confirmed.
Last year, a constable Vilas Shinde succumbed to his injuries after he was thrashed with a stick while on duty. Thereafter, CM Devendra Phadnavis had announced that the traffic policemen will be provided with such cameras for their safety.
