The tulip garden in Srinagar, India, is now in full bloom, attracting visitors from far and wide. Spread over 30 hectares, the garden is situated along the bank of the world-famous Dal Lake at the foothills of the Zabarwan range. This year, the garden boasts an impressive 16 lakh tulips of 68 varieties, including four new varieties.
Over 100 gardeners have been working hard to prepare the flower carpet for over a month, ensuring that visitors get a different look every time they visit. There are early to mid to late varieties of tulips in the garden, planted accordingly to ensure that the garden remains open for a month.
The tulips need a low temperature for survival, and with the temperature hovering over 20 degrees Celsius, the garden is being opened early due to the early bloom of the tulips. The carpet of flowers gives a feeling of paradise and is attracting a lot of tourists and locals every year.
In 2020, a record 3.60 lakh tourists visited the garden to witness the beautiful sight of lakhs of tulip bulbs of myriad colors in full bloom. Even tourists from the iconic Keukenhof flower garden in the Netherlands, dubbed as the world's largest tulip garden, had visited the garden last year.
Since its inauguration in 2007 by then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the garden has become one of the major tourist attractions in the valley. It advances the tourism season in Kashmir and signals the arrival of spring. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque beauty of the tulip garden until the end of April.
