The Bengaluru drivers who are attached with Ola and Uber are a disgruntled lot and have decided to launch a new app to take on these big app based aggregators. Tanveer Pasha, coordinator of the Ola-TaxiForSure-Uber Owners’ and Drivers’ Association, said that around 45,000 drivers who are part of 13 unions are supporting this initiative.
They have also received support from former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy who has assured them that he would help in the initial investment and for the procurement of servers. The drivers are overwhelmed by his gesture and have decided to name the company HDK Cabs.
Kumaraswamy explained that many of the drivers had taken loans to buy new cars because they were promised high incomes by Ola and Uber, but unfortunately, they are not only unable to payback these loans but also are finding it difficult to feed their families. He said that he intended to do something good for the drivers.
Pasha said that three companies have come forward with the apps. The drivers will select an app and give the company a contract to maintain it. They are also planning to set up back end offices.
The incentive for drivers to join HDK Cabs is the low commission (5%) they have to pay. The other attraction includes many welfare measures like car washes twice a month and health insurance cover for the drivers and their families.
