Nowadays we often hear about advancements in cancer research much to the relief of cancer patients. Indian researchers are now focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure accuracy which will help in the timely treatment of cancer patients.
Oncologists say it is essential to correctly diagnose the cancer stage and "faster growing" ones for appropriate and timely treatment.
In a development that provides fresh impetus to AI – based medical technology in India, a team of experts from IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) and Tata Medical Centre (TMC), Kolkata, has devised a computer-assisted model which they say can automatically grade breast cancer aggressiveness, even in remote settings. This grading is necessary as identifying normal, low and higher risk malignant tumours can set the course for immediate and precise treatment.
For that, the team tapped into a form of AI called deep learning which is concerned with algorithms inspired by the structure and function of the brain called artificial neural networks.
Sanjoy Chatterjee, a senior clinical oncologist at TMC said that the software facilitates accurate identification of the aggressive cancers in people residing in any part of the country, allowing faster referral and quicker treatment for patients, irrespective of their geographical location.
Researchers said that the software has shown over 90 per cent precision in the experimental set-up. After proper validation, the process will be released for clinical use.
