Cow dung cakes that are considered holy and are also eco friendly in nature are being used for cremation.
Kolkata's Municipal Corporation has approved the very first initiative of Nimtolla Crematorium for introducing eco friendly alternative for cremating.
Also as cow dung has a religious belief of being holy, people in Kolkata chose to cremate on cow dung cakes. A total of 35 families have opted for this service since it's introduction.
A similar initiative was introduced in Nagpur in 2016, after which KMC wrote to the Nagpur civic body to run a trial in Kolkata.
