India is preparing for a significant comeback on the global archery stage. After more than two decades, the country will once again host major international archery competitions, marking an important milestone for the sport’s development. Delhi has been awarded the second leg of the Asia Cup in 2027, while Ahmedabad will host the Asian Para Archery Championships and Kolkata will stage the South Asian Archery Championships in 2026. These announcements signal a renewed confidence in India’s ability to organize global sporting events and strengthen its role in the international archery community.
The last major international archery event hosted by India was the Asian Archery Championships in Delhi in 2005. Since then, the country has mainly focused on developing domestic competitions and sending athletes to international tournaments abroad. Now, after 22 years, India will once again welcome top archers from across Asia and neighboring regions. The decision was finalized following a meeting between World Archery Asia president Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapol and Archery Association of India secretary general Virendra Sachdeva during Chapol’s three-day visit to Kolkata. The discussions focused on India’s readiness to host upcoming international competitions. Chapol expressed confidence in India’s organizational abilities and emphasized that the country has the infrastructure and expertise required to successfully conduct these prestigious tournaments
The highlight of India’s hosting calendar will be Delhi staging the second leg of the Asia Cup in 2027. The Asia Cup is an important tournament in the international archery calendar, featuring some of the best archers from across the continent. Hosting such a prestigious event will give Indian athletes the advantage of competing in familiar conditions while also exposing local fans to high-level international competition. For young archers across the country, the event could serve as a powerful source of inspiration. Watching elite athletes compete on home soil often encourages aspiring players to pursue the sport seriously. There is also discussion about Delhi potentially hosting the Commonwealth Archery Championships next year, though the final decision is yet to be confirmed.
Another major event lined up is the Asian Para Archery Championships, which will take place in Ahmedabad. The tournament will bring together top para archers from across Asia and is expected to highlight the remarkable determination and resilience of athletes with disabilities. Para archery has grown steadily in India in recent years, with Indian athletes achieving impressive performances in international competitions, including the Paralympics and world championships. Hosting the Asian Para Archery Championships will not only showcase India’s commitment to inclusive sports but also help promote awareness about para athletics and encourage more participation from differently-abled individuals.
Kolkata will also return to the international archery map as it prepares to host the South Asian Archery Championships in 2026. The city has a strong history with the sport. The last time Kolkata hosted an international archery competition was in 2009, when it staged the Asian Archery Grand Prix. Bringing the South Asian Archery Championships to the city will revive that legacy and offer fans another opportunity to witness world-class competition. There is also a possibility that Kolkata could host the Senior National Archery Championships next year, though the final confirmation is still pending.
The coming years promise to be busy and demanding for Indian archers. Along with hosting major tournaments, the national team will also participate in several international competitions. The international season will begin with the opening stage of the Asia Cup Archery tournament in Bangkok from March 21 to 26. Later in the year, Indian archers will also prepare for the Asian Games scheduled in September-October in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Competing in multiple events at home and abroad will provide valuable exposure for Indian athletes and help them gain experience against some of the world’s best competitors.
Hosting international tournaments often has a lasting impact on the development of a sport within a country. For archery in India, these events could lead to greater public interest and media attention, improved infrastructure and training facilities, and Increased opportunities for young athletes. Stronger grassroots development programs in India have already produced several outstanding archers who have performed well at global competitions. By hosting major tournaments, the country can further strengthen its reputation as a rising power in the sport.
Beyond medals and rankings, the return of international archery tournaments to India carries a deeper meaning. For young archers practicing at local academies or rural training centers, seeing elite athletes compete in their own country can be incredibly motivating. It reminds them that the path from a small practice ground to the world stage is possible. Archery, a sport that requires patience, focus, and discipline, has always held a special place in India’s sporting culture. With these upcoming tournaments, the sport is poised to gain renewed momentum. As India prepares to host the world’s best archers once again, the excitement is not just about competition; it is about reviving a sporting tradition and inspiring the champions of tomorrow.
