The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has recently uncovered 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves in the Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium, a non-ferrous metal and one of the key components in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, will surely improve the country's geo-scientific reputation.
In addition to the discovery of lithium reserves, GSI has also handed over 51 mineral blocks to respective state governments. These blocks contain commodities such as gold, potash, molybdenum, base metals, and more. The 11 states that will be receiving these minerals are Jammu and Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.
The Geological Survey of India has also formulated 115 projects on strategic and critical minerals, 16 projects on fertilizer minerals, 55 programs on geoinformatics, 140 programs on fundamental and multidisciplinary geosciences, and 155 programs for training and institutional capacity building.
The discovery of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir is a major success for the Geological Survey of India (GSI). It is hoped that this discovery will result in an improved geo-scientific reputation for India while providing its states with mineral resources that could prove to be economically beneficial.
