We all know that plastic chokes drains, kills animals and is hazardous to humans. The government in many states have introduced various ways to curb the use of plastic.
In a similar effort, the Kotpad Notified Area Council (NAC) in Koraput district in Odisha has introduced this novel scheme of providing food to the poor in exchange for one kilogram of plastic.
The Aahar Scheme
The Odisha government had earlier introduced an ‘Aahar’ scheme that provided poor people in urban areas with a healthy meal comprising rice and ‘dalma’ (lentils with vegetable) at a cost of Rs 5. The food in exchange for plastic scheme was launched under the Aahar scheme. The programme gave food free of cost to any person who brought a kilogram of used polythene bags, plastic bottles and cups.
Protecting Environment
Alok Samantaray, executive officer, Kotpad NAC said that this was a small step to protect the environment and the health of people. The scheme was introduced on Monday. So far, people had brought around 10 kg of plastic waste items and accordingly, 10 meals were given under the ‘Aahar’ scheme.
Seeing the enthusiasm of the people the authorities hope to make the town plastic-free in the coming few weeks.
