This is a touching story of a lone baby elephant who was found in a famished condition in an arid, drought-stricken region of northern Kenya 14 years ago. Rescuers from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) brought the 5-month-old elephant to their center and nursed her back to health.
After her recovery, the happy and healthy pachyderm continued to stay at SWT and grew up along with a herd of other orphaned and rescued elephants just like her. It had been around 14 years since Loijuk, as she was called by her caregivers had been rescued and one day she returned to the wild to lead an independent life. However, the elephant continued to share a close bond with the rescuers and would often visit the sanctuary to meet them.
On one such visit, the caregivers were pleasantly surprised to see a newborn calf accompanying Loijuk. The mother elephant even invited Benjamin Kyalo, the head keeper, to have a special moment with her newborn calf. It was apparent that the proud mother couldn’t wait to show off her baby. The calf who has been named Lily seemed to be only hours old.
The rescuers were also excited and overwhelmed to see the mother and calf elephant. It was very clear that Loijuk had not forgotten the kindness shown to her by the wildlife rescue workers.
For the caregivers, it was a great joy to see Loichuk heal, flourish and transition to wild independent life, and then see her transform into a mother. It was the ultimate affirmation of a job well done.
