Indian opener Shafali Verma shattered records on Sunday when she hammered 73 runs off 49 balls to become the youngest Indian to score an international fifty breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 30-year-old record.
Shafali’s maiden 50 and her mammoth contribution to the total helped India win the T20I against West Indies in St Lucia.
Shefali Verma became the youngest Indian to amass fifty runs in an international match. She achieved the historic feat against West Indies on Sunday when she scored 73 runs in 49 balls to help India project a total of 185 runs in 20 overs. India emerged victorious as West Indies failed to meet the score. She put up a record-shattering 143-run stand with Smriti Mandhana, which is the highest stand by an Indian pair in the shortest format.
Shafali Verma was in awe of her idol Sachin Tendulkar. In 2013, as a nine-year-old sitting on her father’s shoulder chanting Sachin’s name, she never imagined that she would be breaking her idol’s record. Hailing from Rohtak, she started her extraordinary journey by enrolling in a cricket training academy in the guise of a boy as the city’s cricket academies wouldn’t accept girls. She was in news recently as she smashed 46 off 33 balls while playing against South Africa in her second international match for India.
Shafali who is 15 years 285 days old became the youngest Indian to score an international fifty. The youngest woman in the world to score fifty runs in an international match is Kavisha Egodageof UAE who achieved the feat when she was 15 years 267 days old while playing against Malaysia in January this year.
